Pregnancy Questions and Answers

Question:
I've heard of a new treatment for sickle-cell disease that relieves severe pain. Can a pregnant woman take it?
Answer:
You probably mean hydroxyurea, which has proved to be the first effective treatment of sickle-cell anemia. It reduces some of the excruciating pain, but its use carries some risk and is not for all sickle-cell sufferers. Because we do not know its long-term effects, women who are pregnant are advised not to use it.
